Tide Ever Rising by Mandi Tucker Slack -- Blog Tour/Giveaway

Tide Ever Rising

Publisher: Bonneville

Published: February 12, 2013

ISBN13: 9781462111077

Paperback: 208 pages

FTC FYI: I received a PDF copy in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Summary

Kadence Reynold’s favorite pastime is exploring old ghost towns. When she and her sister, Maysha stumble across an old journal and cheap pendant hidden in the depths of a crumbling foundation near Eureka, Utah, their world is suddenly turned upside down. Immediately, strange dreams and premonitions begin to haunt “Kadie” as she learns more about the keeper of the journal, Charlotte Clark. Kadie sets out on a journey to learn more about Charlotte and her family, and she and Maysha travel to Bremerton, Washington, where they discover Charlotte's still living twin sister, Adelaide and her family.

My Review

4 out of 5 stars.  I was excited to a part of this Blog Tour.  When I read the summary, I knew I would enjoy the book.  I was right.  I was also drawn to the cover, isn't is pretty?  Kadie is a great character, and her sister Maysha added some really funny comic relief.  I really liked where the story took me as a reader.  I love the Washington area, having visited there a few years ago.  After arriving Kadie meets Adelaide and her family, and that is where the story really picks up.  Something terrible happens to Kadie and Adelaide's grandson Logan.  I also enjoyed the point of view switches between Logan and Kadie.  The story is mostly told through Kadie's point of view, but when it is necessary, I am excited to see what's going on in another character's head.  The author does a great job of that.  The ending of this book is so exciting, I was on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen.

Rapunzel Untangled by Cindy C. Bennett -- Blog Tour/Interview/Giveaway

Rapunzel Untangled

Author: Cindy C. Bennett

Publisher: Cedar Fort

Published: February 12th, 2013

Hardcover: 304 pages

ISBN13: 9781462111565

FTC FYI: I received a PDF copy in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Summary

Not to mention that she’s also the key to ultimately saving the world from certain destruction. But then she meets a boy named Fane, who changes all she has ever known, and she decides to risk everything familiar to find out who she really is.

Filled with romance, adventure, and mystery, Rapunzel Untangled is one story you won’t want to put down. Discover the true meaning of love and friendship in this modern twist to the classic fairytale.

Author Interview

Mindy:  As a reader, I'm always interested to find out what types of books authors like to read themselves. You write a variety of books, but what genre is your favorite to read and why

Cindy:  I tend to read YA books mostly. There are so many great ones available right now. The main reason I began writing YA is because it's what I was reading. Once in a while I'll venture off into horror, thriller, romance, or other adult novels, but the bulk of what I read is YA. In fact, I just finished Warm Bodies, and am partly into Fight Club, which is definitely not YA, but still very interesting. I just beta-read three different YA books for other authors, and have a huge pile of TBR which are almost exclusively YA. I only wish I had more time to read, but it feels like such a guilty pleasure any more when I should be writing. That's what's great about long baths, long-lines to wait in, and long car rides - guilt free reading!

Thank you Cindy!

My Review

Rapunzel Untangled was very enjoyable.  I thought Rapunzel herself was a doll and although naive (of course she was naive, she has spent her whole life in a tower) she learns a lot about friendship, love, and herself.  I immediately loved Fane.  He's a very sweet guy and takes Rapunzel under his wing.  Helping her to question her strange upbringing and how sick she really is.

3 1/2 of out 5 stars.  This is a fast paced book with great characters, romance, and lots of heart.  The ending took a different turn I wasn't expecting, but it did not distract me from enjoying the book.

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack -- Book Blast

Baked Alaska by Josi S. Kilpack

Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her. *Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Praise for Baked Alaska
Josi Kilpack has done it again. You would think that all these events that occur in Sadie's life wouldn't be natural, but Josi Kilpack has a way of making you believe that it just "happens" and it is normal. I have grown to love Sadie's character, even if she is a busybody, you can't help but cheer for her as she attempts to solve a mystery or crime. One of my favorite series. :)

Patrick’s day gig for the last five years has been teaching high school math in Nashville, TN. He currently makes his home in Nashville with his wonderfully patient wife, Mary, and four sons he thinks are amazing: Patrick, Connor, Daniel, and Ethan. Bonded by Michelle Davidson Argyle

Bonded

Author: Michelle Davidson Argyle

Publisher: Rhemalda Publishing

Published: November 2012

ISBN13: 9781936850648

Hardcover: 365 pages

FTC FYI: Received an ebook copy in change for an honest review.

Goodreads Summary

What happened after Cinderella married her prince? How did the evil sorceress in Sleeping Beauty turn evil in the first place? Discover these stories and a world filled with magic, forbidden love, elves, sprites, dragons, and the most powerful creatures of all— the fairies —in Bonded, a collection of three fairy tale inspired novellas.

CINDERS: A Cinderella sequel. Money can’t buy love, but magic isn’t a sure bet either. Cinderella, now officially a princess, finds royal life is not what she once dreamed. When a mysterious elf from her past stirs up long-suppressed passion, Cinderella begins to wonder if there really is love beneath the spell that captured her husband’s heart. But undoing magic can be harder than casting the initial spell, and the results are even less predictable.

THIRDS: A retelling of the Grimm’s fairy tale, One-Eye, Two-Eyes, Three-Eyes. Issina is surrounded by magic, yet none of it belongs to her. Despised and abused by her mother and sisters, she finds comfort when she meets the beautiful elves living in the nearby woods. The elves want to help her discover her own magic, but it’s not the kind of power she hoped for, and she learns there is more to magic than getting what you want.

SCALES: A Sleeping Beauty prequel. The sun never sets in the realm of the fairies. When the young fairy Serina looks into her sister’s eyes, she sees darkness for the first time. After her mother is murdered, Serina defies fairy law to follow her sister to the human realm. There she discovers the strength of a bond, the weight of a promise, and the darkness in her own heart.

My Review

I really enjoyed these three novellas by Michelle Davidson Argyle.  Each were very well-written and I was taken into the different story immediately.  Ever since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with fairytales.  I would spend hours in my room reading.  Aurora from Sleeping Beauty is my all-time favorite, and so I was excited to read Scales.  But, if I had to pick a favorite (and it was really hard) it would be Cinders.  Cinderella's (Christina's) story was fascinating to me.  What is happily ever after isn't enough?  The guilt of using magic to win her prince really weighed on Cinderella's heart.  Did her prince really love her?  How Cinderella finds the truth, and the events that take place are actually heart breaking, but I really liked where Michelle took the story, and teaches that not all stories have a happy ending.

4 out of 5 stars.  I want to thank Michelle for the chance to read and review these amazing stories.  The settings and characters immediately draw you in.  Once you start Bonded, you won't stop until you're done.  Michelle is also the author of The Breakaway, which is on my review list.  The sequel Pieces just came out! Check out all of Michelle's titles, including Monarch

Jack Templar: Monster Hunter by Jeff Gunhus -- Blog Tour/Giveaway

Jack Templar: Monster Hunter

Author: Jeff Gunhus

Publisher: Seven Guns Press

Published: October 2012

ebook/Kindle Edition: 197 pages

ISBN13: 9780988425903

FTC FYI: I received an ebook copy in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Summary

Orphan Jack Templar has no memory of his parents and only the smallest details from his Aunt Sophie about how they died. The day before Jack's fourteenth birthday, things start to change for him. At first it's great: A sudden new strength helps him defend his nose-picking friend "T-Rex" from the school bully, and even his crush, Cindy Adams, takes notice. But then a mysterious girl named Eva arrives and tells him two facts that will change his life forever. First, that he's the descendent of a long line of monster hunters and he's destined to be in the family business. Second, that there's a truce between man and monster that children are off-limits...until their fourteenth birthday! Jack has only one day before hundreds of monsters will descend on his little town of Sunnyvale and try to kill him.

As if that weren't enough, things get even more complicated when Jack discovers that the Lord of the Creach (as the monsters are collectively known) holds a personal grudge against him and will do anything to see that Jack has a slow and painful death. To stay alive and save his friends, Jack will have to battle werewolves, vampires, harpies, trolls, zombies and more. But perhaps the most dangerous thing he must face is the truth about his past. Why do the other hunters call him the last Templar? Why do they whisper that he may be the "One?" Why do the monsters want him dead so badly? Even as these questions plague him, he quickly discovers survival is his new full-time job and that in the world of monster hunters, nothing is really what it seems.

My Review

When I read the premise about this book, still sounded like something I would really enjoy.  Having said that, I did enjoy the book, but there was a couple things right away that prevented me from really liking it.  The story is fun, full of action and surprising twists.  But, in the beginning there was the "warning" from Jack, warning me what would happen if I continued reading.  That didn't bother me as much, as the second "warning" that followed.  I was able to see past that, and keep reading.  The story was picking up, characters were introduced.  Then, right during the action, there were two breaks from the story, warning me again, and then farther along, an explanation on how to kill Zombies.  Which could have been explained (and it essentially was), to Jack by a different character.

That being said, there were some elements of the story I did enjoy.  When I wasn't being taken away, it reads quickly and is very fast paced.  I liked Jack a lot.  He goes through many things very quickly, loses some people he cares about, and finds out some shocking news.  From what happens in the end, there will be a sequel.

Forever My Girl by Heidi McLaughlin -- Book Blast

Forever My Girl

I was never supposed to be a rock star. I had my life all planned out for me. Play football in college. Go to the NFL. Marry my high school sweetheart and live happily ever after.

I broke both our hearts that day when I told her I was leaving. I was young. I made the right decision for me, but the wrong decision for us. I’ve poured my soul into my music, but I’ve never forgotten her. Her smell, her smile.

And now I’m going back.

After ten years.

I hope I can explain that after all this time.

I still want her to be my forever girl

The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters by Frank L. Cole -- Blog Tour & Giveaway

The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters

Author: Frank L. Cole

Published: June 2009

ISBN: 978-1-59955-303-0

Paperback: 99 pages

FTC FYI: Checked out from the library

Goodreads Summary

Meet Hashbrown Winters. Like any typical Pordunce Elementary fifth grader, he's got a story. Actually he has several. There's the story of how he got his nickname, the story of how his treehouse club became one of the most popular groups at school, and, of course, the story of his untimely demise after a mishap with the beloved pet cockroach of Pordunce's walking death dealer, Hambone Oxcart. Will Hashbrown be able to convince Pordunce's own mob boss, Cordovo Figanewty, to offer him protection? Or are his days at Pordunce about to come to a swift and painful end? In this hilarious debut novel from Frank L. Cole, every kid who's any kid has a nickname, and half the fun of the story is figuring out how they got it. The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters will keep kids and parents alike laughing out loud, groaning in sympathy, and turning pages until well past bedtime.

Back Cover

"There I stood, hiding next to the vending machines, disguised as a potted plant.  I brushed the plastic leaves from my face and stared down the hallway toward the front double doors.  Snow Cone always said this ridiculous costume would come in handy one day.
Fifteen minutes had passed since the last student left for the buses, but I wasn't about to take any chances.  Not with my life hanging in the balance.  Leaning forward, I peered around the corner just as the sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway.  Was this it?  Could this be him?  Was I about to be pulverized by Hambone while wearing an emergency disguise I had just pulled from my locker?"

My Review

The Adventures of Hashbrown Winters is the first book in the Hashbrown series.  Book 4 is coming out soon, so Frank is touring all of these books before it's release.  Watch for my reviews for all 4 books!

Hashbrown is quite the character.  Pordunce Elementary is school full of kids with nicknames.  You have to earn your nickname in this school.  I thought Hashbrown's friend "Whiz" had the best name (for obvious reasons).  As the story progresses, Hashbrown finds himself in trouble with the school bully and his hissing cockroach.  The things that Hashbrown has to do to fix his problems are hilarious, even consulting with the school's mafia.  Yes, mafia.

This book is darling.  I had a smile on my face the whole time I was reading.  It is perfect for your middle grade reader, even you.  Frank Cole is a pal, and I know that he is a funny guy.  You can tell that in his writing.  There are many phrases where I was laughing out loud.  I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

4 out of 5 stars.  Frank is also the author of Guardians of the Hidden Scepter and Guardians of Elijah's Fire series.  They are also very good as well.
