My review
It only took reading a couple pages and then I was completely immersed in the story. I enjoyed how this book stands alone, but all the books in the series intertwine. When I started reading, I felt like I already knew the characters. "Aunt" Nellie was quick to love and Gareth also won we over quickly. He had a certain quality that I eagerly wanted to read more about. Catherine too was wonderful. In fact, all of the characters were fantastic. I enjoyed Gareth and Catherine's "lessons" when Gareth was in the present time. I especially thought the first time Gareth tried on jeans was particularly fun. It made me smile when he asked why they looked so "worn". I loved Gareth and Catherine's "lessons" and how they got to know each other. It was also funny when Catherine told Gareth he couldn't carry a sword around London. I enjoyed the turn the story took and why the two had to travel back to Gareth's time. The couple's quiet moments were sweet and enduring, but they were both torn between their two worlds.
5 out of 5 stars. The ending is quite perfect for the story. I will be checking out the other books in the series to get to know the other characters.

Snippet From A Savage
Ghost:
Above it
hung a really old-looking painting. From the clothing on the man and two
children, I guessed it must have been in the early 1800s. Were they ancestors,
to have such a prominent place in the room? I stepped closer, drawn to the
little girl in the picture. Her curls refused to be tamed, and the painter had
captured a mischievous gleam in her eyes that made me wonder what she saw off
screen. Her expression reminded me of Mellie.
I shifted
my attention to the rest of the people, settling on the man dressed in a
familiar red British uniform but wearing a cape made of the blue in the British
flag. Was he the little girl’s father?
Out of
nowhere, with powerful feelings like in a dream, came an image of him wandering
the halls of this castle. Sad and alone, he called for someone, but no one
came.
“Did you
lose them and then have to live in this house all by yourself?” I whispered,
caught up in a sense of loss so strong it brought sudden tears. “So much
emptiness. Did it echo around you, trying to swallow you up?”
My hair
swirled around with a breezy, soft yeeesssss, and the hair on my
arms stood up. Shocked, I held my breath and searched the room. For a second I
thought I could see the man in the portrait standing by a bookcase. I blinked
and he was gone.
I took a
deep breath, resisting the urge to run screaming from the room. I must not give
rein to the overactive imagination of my childhood. With my back held rigid, I
forced my feet to walk at a normal pace to the door, just like I used to do as
a little kid after staying up too late to watch a scary movie.
Pausing
in the doorway, I glanced back. Had I really seen a .... No.

Torn Canvas (Safe Harbors #2)
Author: Donna K. Weaver
Publisher: Emerald Arch Publishing
Published: June 16th, 2014
ASIN: B00KJ79O10
Kindle edition: 275 pages
Book Summary
Modern-day pirates took more than Jori Virtanen’s friends; they stole his face. Not only does the twenty-four-year-old former model have to confront months of reconstructive surgery, he discovers his previous life was as superficial as his looks. Jori struggles to make a new life for himself as an artist while evading the press. They expect a hero, but he knows the truth. His beauty masks a beast.
Olivia Howard’s given up a normal life for her job, and the sacrifices are finally paying off. The twenty-six-year-old talk-show host’s ratings are heading to the top of the charts. Her dream is to make a difference in people’s lives, but the studio wants mind fluff—like interviewing hot model Jori Virtanen. When Olivia learns the guy helped rescue passengers on a cruise excursion from kidnappers, she knows this is the story she needs to make her case. The only problem is the hero was injured, and now he’s disappeared.
The more Olivia learns about the man behind the scar, the more intrigued she becomes. But Jori is no girl’s happily ever after. Once she finds him, Olivia has to free his heart and heal the beast.
My Review
Torn Canvas is another strong offering from Donna Weaver. I loved how we were able to see the pirate attack from Jori's point of view and what he went through after to get his life back together. Not only does he have an injury, his life needs changing. I also enjoyed the switching of POVs from Jori and Olivia. I was glad for the primary focus to be on Jori, but I did really like Olivia. Jori is a very complex character. In Torn Canvas, we are able to learn more about his past, why he is the way he is. I also loved reading about what others on the cruise went through waiting to hear news about Lyn and Braedon.
Donna has done another amazing job with Torn Canvas. Her writing just gets better and better. If you have not read A Change of Plans, I would start with that one. Donna does a great job of giving the reader some catch up details, but I feel you will enjoy Torn Canvas more having that background information.

SAFE HARBORS SERIES BOOKS SYNOPSIS:
A Change of Plans - Book 1 in the Safe Harbors series
When Lyn sets off on her supposedly uncomplicated and unromantic cruise, she never dreams it will include pirates. All the 25-year-old Colorado high school teacher wants is to forget that her dead fiancé was a cheating scumbag. What she plans is a vacation diversion; what fate provides is Braedon, an intriguing surgeon. She finds herself drawn to him: his gentle humor, his love of music, and even his willingness to let her take him down during morning karate practices. Against the backdrop of the ship’s make-believe world and its temporary friendships, her emotions come alive.
However, fear is an emotion, too. Unaware of the sensitive waters he navigates, Braedon moves to take their relationship beyond friendship--on the very anniversary Lyn came on the cruise to forget. But Lyn's painful memories are too powerful, and she runs off in a panic.
Things are bad enough when the pair finds themselves on one of the cruise’s snorkeling excursions in American Samoa. However, paradise turns to piracy when their party is kidnapped. Lyn’s fear of a fairytale turns grim. Now she must fight alongside the man she rejected, first for their freedom and then against storms, sharks, and shipwreck.
Hope’s Watch - A Safe Harbors Short Story
Elle Reinhardt loves people and has a gift for turning groups of strangers into friends. When she talks her best friend Lyn into taking a month-long Pacific cruise, Elle is in her element, gathering fellow passengers to her. But things go horribly wrong when a ship excursion ends in death and disaster at the hands of modern-day pirates.
Filled with her own emotional wounds from the experience, Elle tries desperately to buoy up the grieving loved ones as they wait for news on those lost at sea. Malcolm Armstrong, friend of one of the missing men, arrives to act as family spokesman. Elle knows it’s unreasonable, but she resents his presence. When Mal offers the strength she so desperately needs, will she be able to let go of her animosity and accept his support?
This eBook-exclusive short story includes special excerpts from both A Change of Plans and Torn Canvas.

Excerpt
The door burst open and a pretty girl with long strawberry blond hair stomped out. Her headlong rush drove her right at Francie, who squeezed against the wall, almost out of the way. Their shoulders hit, and they both stumbled. As Francie steadied herself, she could see tears in the girl’s heavily made up eyes. Staggering for a couple of paces, she managed to stay on her feet and then ran down the hallway.
“Come back here,” a man yelled from inside. He dashed out the door and halfway down the hall before it was obvious the student had made her escape.
Yelling at a student and chasing her down the hallway? That can't be my new boss.Francie couldn’t help staring at the compact but solidly built—almost buff—man who stood with his back to her. The angry energy came off him in waves, and she had to fight a primal instinct to run and hide. Giving a quick glance over her shoulder, Francie began to edge away. Maybe she could pretend she hadn’t seen. Suddenly the man swore and spun around, seeming to see Francie for the first time.
“What are you doing there?” he growled. “Eavesdropping?”

Home Matters by Julie N. Ford
According to her mother, Olivia Pembroke was born to be a star. But how is she supposed to be famous when she can't even get a decent acting gig? Her lucky break comes when she lands an audition for a wildly popular home improvement show. Even though she has no design training and has never even held a power tool, she refuses to let that stop her. She's confident that her destiny is finally within reach.
When her affections are torn between her heartthrob co-host and the irritating, yet somehow endearing lead contractor, does she continue to reach for the stars? Or does she design a new happily ever after? One that leads not to the fading lights of fame and fortune, but to a love that will burn forever.
Silver Linings by Kaylee Baldwin
Drew Westfall wants nothing more than to forget what he had to do in the name of "smart" business. Cutting off all ties with his parents—including handing over the entire contents of his trust fund to a charity—he takes off for Bridger, Colorado where his best friend has an extra room for him. It doesn't take long for him to realize that his business degree won’t do him much good in a town as small as Bridger, but he's broke and has nowhere else to go.
Eden Torresi has every reason to wallow. Not only did she lose her mother, but she had to drop out of nursing school and is in a relationship with a guy unwilling to commit. But Eden isn't the wallowing type. Instead, she chooses to spend most of her time taking care of the seniors at Silver Linings Nursing home. When she learns that her boyfriend's new roommate is down on his luck, her caring nature makes her want to reach out to him and offer what help she can. But the more time they spend together, the more complicated things get, especially when the seniors of Silver Linings decide to play matchmaker.
Righting a Wrong by Rachael Anderson
Seven years ago, Cambri Blaine fled her small hometown of Bridger, Colorado after her senior year ended in a fiasco. Only Jace Sutton knew the real reason why—that she was a spineless coward. Now, seven years later, her father's been in an accident and needs help, and Cambr has no choice but to return home. So with trepidation, she takes a leave of absence from the landscape architecture firm where she works and boards a plane, hoping against hope that Jace is no longer around and that the past can stay where it belongs—in the past.
If only life worked that way.
Jace never expected to see Cambri again. After she’d led him on, bruised his heart, and left town without a backward glance, he was forced to pick up the pieces and try not to hate her for it. Eventually, he put it behind him and moved on, creating a life for himself in his beloved hometown. But now that Cambri is back and looking more beautiful and sophisticated than ever, some of those old feelings resurface, and Jake instinctively knows, for the sake of his heart, that he needs to avoid her at all costs.
If only it were that easy.
Lost and Found by Karey White
Lydia was supposed to have an adventurous and exciting summer. Instead she's done nothing more than read and eat takeout. Now it's time to go home, and what does she have to show for it? A big fat nothing. Unless, of course, her trip to the airport somehow turns into something more than just a flight home.
Blake feels like he's been sent on a wild goose chase. While work is piling up back in Denver, he's on the other side of the country, hunting for some mysterious box that his grandfather left him. Well, no more. Nothing inside that box could possibly be more important than the opportunity to make it as the youngest partner at his firm. So he's going home, and that's that. But that's before he discovers his flight has been cancelled.
When these two strangers meet at the airport, they make a split-second decision to search for the box together. Maybe with both of them on the hunt, Lydia can have her adventure and Blake can find the box. And maybe, if they’re lucky, they’ll even find some romance.

Mindy's Review
I thought this book was brilliant. I loved it. I also loved how Donna threw some of my favorite movie references in it. Especially Hobbits. But, I didn't love the book just for those reasons.
I really didn't know what to expect when I was reading A Change of Plans, but immediately I was drawn to the cover, and while reading, what was inside it. This book has everything a reader could ask for. Romance, humor, suspense, love, hope, strong, likeable characters, and a great fast-paced plot that will keep you reading until the end. I read this book in one day because I couldn't put it down. I don't want to give things away, but my heart would break for Lyn. Many things happened to here, but I loved how her stunning character would help her through it. Braedon was also a fav, and Jori too. I could tell that all of Donna's characters were important to her through her writing because of the way they all shine. Am I gushing? I'm gushing, but this book deserves it. This book has it all, I laughed and I cried.
5 of out 5 stars. I can't wait to read more from this awesome debut author.
