Small towns have big stories. That was a lesson Katie's father taught her years ago. A lesson sheís taken to heart. And right now, Katie is desperate for a big story. Reeling from the recent loss of her father and with her agent breathing down her neck for the next book, the twenty-one-year-old writer picks a spot on the map and finds herself bound for a middle-of-nowhere town called Bishopville, South Carolina.

Taking a chance on the words of a local grocer, Katie stumbles upon a rare breed of dogs raised by the town doctor and his nephew Kyle. The only problem? Kyle isnít interested in telling storiesóespecially not to a big-city girl who canít seem to sit still. In an attempt to win him over as the clock winds down, Katie finds herself immersed in Kyleís world, doing everything but writing.

When inspiration finally strikes, Katie is faced with an unforeseen catastrophe and a truth she can no longer ignore. While she has come to love the dogs, the real story may be about Kyle Walker.

wesley-bio-300x460Wesley Banks was born in 1983 and grew up on the west coast of Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelorís and Masterís degree in Civil Engineering. After spending over 7 years building movable bridges from Florida to Washington he decided to focus on his true passion: writing.

Wesley recently moved from Florida to Oregon to get back to the great outdoors that heís love so much. He lives with my wife Lindsey, and his two dogs Linkin and Story. Most of his time these days is spent writing, with as much rock climbing, hiking, or skiing as they can fit in.

Wesley's debut novel, ìHope In Every Raindrop, is set to be released May of 2015.

When you read Hope In Every Raindrop, one thing you'll quickly notice is Kyle Walker is the quiet type. He's far from shy, but he tends to be more reserved, especially about himself. So, I thought it would be fun to ask Kyle some random questions that he couldn't avoid answering.

What do you really want to do on a date?

As long as it's with the right girl, it doesn't much matter what we do. But if I had to pick one thing, I think I might go with horseback riding at sunset. It's hard to beat that.

What are your biggest turn offs?

Probably something simple like too much makeup or over doing it. I'd rather see a girl in jeans, a t-shirt, and a pony tail.

What about turn-ons?

A love for animals, and a good smile.

If you could only eat one thing every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Doc makes some amazing ribs, so probably that.

What's your favorite 90s jam?

To be honest, I never listened to much music growing up. But, if I had to choose, I think I'd go with "Check Yes or No" by George Strait.

Do you have any pet peeves?

I remember in elementary school, one of my teachers assigned us this project where we had to write down the steps to make a peanut butter and jelly (PB&J) sandwich. We then went in front of the class and tried to make a PB&J using someone else's description. We all ended up with some really weird sandwiches. Ever since then I've been a big fan of details.

If you could tell everyone one fact about dogs, and only one fact, what would it be?

The love of a dog is one of the few things that has the rare ability to expand the human heart.
Well, that does it for the interview with Kyle Walker. Were his answers what you expected?

Have another question for Kyle? Leave them in the comments below!

Not in the Script by Amy Finnegan -- Blog Tour/Interview/Giveaway

NotInTheScript-500pxNot in the Script

Author: Amy Finnegan

Publisher: Bloomsbury

Published: October 7th, 2014

ISBN13: 9781408855539

Paperback: 367 pages

FTC: Received a paperback ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Goodreads Summary

Millions of people witnessed Emma Taylor’s first kiss—a kiss that needed twelve takes and four camera angles to get right. After spending nearly all of her teen years performing on cue, Emma wonders if any part of her life is real anymore . . . particularly her relationships.

Jake Elliott’s face is on magazine ads around the world, but his lucrative modeling deals were a poor substitute for what he had to leave behind. Now acting is offering Jake everything he wants: close proximity to home; an opportunity to finally start school; and plenty of time with the smart and irresistible Emma Taylor . . . if she would just give him a chance.

When Jake takes Emma behind the scenes of his real life, she begins to see how genuine he is, but on-set relationships always end badly. Don’t they? Toss in Hollywood’s most notorious heartthrob and a resident diva who may or may not be as evil as she seems, and the production of Coyote Hills heats up in unexpected—and romantic—ways.

This novel in the deliciously fun If Only romance line proves that the best kinds of love stories don’t follow a script.

My Review

WOW! This book was so much fun.  I loved it.  Amy does a fantastic job of giving the reader a glimpse of celebrity life.  Emma is a fabulous character.  Her head is in the right place when it comes to the Hollywood scene, but her heart and personal life needed work.  She has been burned many times in the past, and is very cautious when she meets Jake (who is absolutely perfect for her).  I instantly loved Jake!  A down-to-earth guy who works hard, using his earnings for a good cause.  He and Emma start hanging out "as friends".  Emma's best friend stated for years that if she ever met "The Bod", he was hers.  The Bod ended up being Jake Elliot, a co-star of Emma's.  Emma feels guilty about the relationship.

I liked how this book was written with the point of view switches between Emma and Jake.  It was great seeing each other's perspective on the events that take place.  I felt bad for Emma at times with all she had to endure.  Being a celebrity has a price.  She is taken advantage of by so many, including someone very close to her.  Emma puts up with a great deal.  Jake was great for her in helping her see things differently, and just being a great friend.  However, many things are thrown at them as they try to see if they can be together.

5 out of 5 stars.  Not in the Script is a fun, clean book that you can give to your teens without worry.  I can't wait for more from this talented author.

Author Interview

How do you know so much about the Hollywood scene?

I have a brother who has an amazing job: He works for Fox on their studio lot in Hollywood. Over the years, his behind-the-scenes stories about filmmaking have lit up my writer’s brain like bulbs on a Christmas tree, and one thing in particular that he said that inspired an important aspect of NOT IN THE SCRIPT. He told me about a film he was working on in which the villain of the story was played by one of the nicest guys he’d ever met (the actor would play basketball or just hang out with my brother during breaks, and he’d often talk about his family and friends), and the hero of the story was played by a skirt-chasing jerk with a filthy mouth. And then my brother said something like, “You wouldn’t believe how common that scenario is in this business.”

That’s when I went home and actually started writing. Additional concepts came into place quickly, but this was the spark that started a fire in me and became a central theme in the novel.

But I didn’t want to fake my way through the filmmaking scenes in the book. I needed to do some serious research in order to make things feel authentic. So on the production side of things, my brother gave me some amazing opportunities to not only tour dozens of sets, but to sit in on the productions of some of my favorite shows, such as Parks and Recreation and Parenthood. I have also been a fly on the wall during sound mixing for another of my all time favorite shows: Chuck! And I’ve also watched Foley artists work their sound effect magic for an episode of The Walking Dead. All along the way, I’ve asked countless (helpful!) crewmembers endless questions in order to get the technical details of NOT IN THE SCRIPT as accurate as possible. But it hardly felt like work. Every bit of filmmaking is fascinating, no matter which side of the camera you’re on. I can’t get enough of it.

And because I never like to do anything halfway, I also wanted to learn what acting was all about. For this, I went pretty hardcore and took lessons from an on-set acting coach who works with some of the largest studios. She is also an accomplished actress herself, having starred on a popular television show for over a decade. It was incredibly eye-opening, challenging, and entertaining. But I’ll definitely leave the acting to the professionals while I write in my quiet little corner!

Who was your favorite character to write?

Jake was probably my favorite character to write, because he entered my mind fully formed. Then I had to dream up a plot and a princess for him! Oddly enough, my connection to the male lead is always stronger in the novels I write, which is why I chose to write NOT IN THE SCRIPT in an alternating, first person point of view. Third person wouldn’t have felt close enough for me, and telling the entire story from Emma’s point of view wouldn’t feel true to the story, since it began with Jake!

While writing this book, was there a character that surprised you?

Two of them, actually. Brett and Kimmi both surprised me because I found a lot more depth to them with each revision of this story. It was almost like they were trying to say, “C’mon, Amy, you know I’m not that shallow. There’s more to me than you’re telling people.” I loved sticking them into any scene I could get away with, especially together.

How long did it take you to write Not in the Script?

After about a year of working on it, I finished my first draft in 2007. Crazy, right? This draft was just setting the bones down, and then I had to beef it up with more substance . . . but I also had trim it down, because the original draft was about 120k words. So that was a bit of tricky business. I also did a lot of my behind-the-scenes research after the first draft was completed; until that point, I wasn’t exactly sure which technical details I needed to know about filmmaking.

I also worked on several additional projects during the next five years. I would revise NOT IN THE SCRIPT, and then set it aside and work on something else so I would have fresh eyes when I returned to it. I did this many times over. But this was during the unusually-extended period in YA lit that was dominated by paranormal romances, so unless I had decided to make Jake spontaneously turn into a vampire, werewolf, dark angel, zombie, or fairy king, NOT IN THE SCRIPT would’ve had a slim chance of making it onto the shelves at that time anyway. So I just revised some more until publishers wanted contemporary romance again (:

What is next for you?

I’m currently revising what I hope will be the first novel in a historical fantasy series. The only “fantasy” element is that it takes place in a country that doesn’t actually exist, but I’m about to take my fourth trip to the UK where I’ve been doing some incredibly fun research for it!

Thank you, Amy!

Goodreads Summary

Ainslie’s tenuous control over her life shatters when her warring parents ditch her at Christmas. While they take a cruise to “work things out,” Ainslie must spend the holiday with her aunt and uncle, owners of a struggling Mystery School and occult store. Plunged into the world of fire fortunes, dragons, entity eaters, and an ailing spell book, Ainslie is well beyond her comfort zone. Then she meets Thor, a seventeen year-old dragon shaman. He spikes her pulse and calms her OCD. But will she lose him once he discovers her past? Or will Thor’s deadly secret, hidden in plain view, be their undo-ing?

My Review

I was approached to be on the blog tour for this book, but the timing just wasn't right.  I did, however, think this book looked fun and I was right.  So, I was thrilled when Astraea Press was looking for bloggers to host some of their authors.

Spells by Ariella Moon is a fun book with great characters.  I really enjoyed how Ainslie came to know herself and her parents better by spending time away from them.  (That may not make sense until you read the book :)  Ainslie was able to overcome some her own issues as well, all while opening her mind to spells.

Author Interview

1. How long have you been writing?

When my daughter started kindergarten, I began work on my first manuscript. By the time she graduated from high school, I had completed three manuscripts and gone through two agents. All of my manuscripts won numerous awards, but Spell Check was the first to sell.

2. What gave you the idea for the series?

The Teen Wytche Saga began with the thought, "What if someone aimed a love spell at their best friend's secret crush?" Then, as I wrote Spell Check, I knew Salem, the school goth, had to have her own story. In Spell Struck, I built on the sibling rivalry and mental illness issues I had hinted at in Spell Check. I realized the key to the Saga would be the spell book that continually morphs into different types of magic. In Spell Fire the series takes off in a different direction with many new characters. It acts as a bridge between the first two books and the upcoming 4th and 5th books.

3. What is your favorite genre to read?

I love lots of genres and tend to read everything by one author before I move on to the next. I read a lot of Young Adult, including the Hunger Games, but also devoured Gail Carriger's steampunk Finishing School series and her Alexia Tarabotti novels. Once I finish reading the novels I'm judging for the Prism Awards, I'll return to reading Divergent.  Can't wait!

Spell Fire Excerpt

I found a patch of sunlight where I could sit with my back against the wall and pulled out The Scarlet Letter. I kept my head down while Uncle Esmun arrived and took his seat. Years before Sophia's disappearance and my descent into the rabbit hole, I had sat in on a few of Dad's business meetings. I knew the protocol. Be quiet and inconspicuous. Don't interrupt the adults; they have important business matters to discuss. Only these adults were discussing the tarot cards they had drawn from a deck in the center of the table.
I tried to concentrate on Hawthorne's book, on Hester's vengeful husband who'd practiced medicine under an assumed name. But Hazel was telling the rest of the group she had just returned from Cornwall, England and had brought each of them a gift. I wondered what it could be. Seashells? Photos of quaint cottages?
ʺI have a pixie for each of you.ʺ
Right. Like you could get those past customs.
ʺHow nice of you, Hazel,ʺ Aunt Terra said.
I thought back to what I knew about pixies. Weren't they supposed to be a) extremely troublesome and b) not real?
Hazel sashayed up to each Board member, starting with Cerelia, and acted like she was putting a pixie in their hands or on their shoulder. As she progressed around the table, some members oohed and aahed as if she was a three-year-old showing off a crayon drawing. When she approached Evie's grandmother, the tote vibrated, rattling the glass table. Hazel faltered, her expression uncertain. She dropped back, and the rattling stopped. Brimstone smells hissed through the closed zipper. Cerelia shrank back.
Evie's grandmother pointed a warning finger at the tote. ʺStop it. Don't be rude.ʺ
My jaw dropped. Thor glanced at me, then flicked his gaze back to the tote. It stopped emitting smoke.
Uncle Esmun rubbed his nose. Hazelʹs head wobbled as if she were figuring out her next course of action. She still cupped her hand as if she carried an invisible pixie.
Hello! Did you not notice the real magical object in the room?
Seemingly unable to drop the pretense, Hazel advanced toward the alientologist. He ignored her and scribbled in his little notebook. Thor politely rebuffed her. Both rose at least twenty degrees on my Guy Approval Meter.
I checked my watch. The meeting had started forty minutes ago. Nothing had been accomplished. No one had addressed the tote situation. My face warmed again. I shifted position. Instead of sitting against the wall with my legs straight in front of me, I sat cross‑legged and hunched over my book. A tugging sensation rippled between my shoulder blades.
Thor glanced my way.
The more I thought about how much Aunt Terra and Uncle Esmun must need every cent the store and mystery school could generate, the more energy swelled behind me. Warmth radiated from my face. My whole body felt as if it was glowing. I tried to distract myself by flitting back to my book and my lengthy homework assignment list.
I couldn't concentrate.
Hazel had reached Aunt Terra and delivered what I hoped was the last pixie. She pivoted and spied me. The energy behind me compacted. It crackled with huge warrior/ninja/dragon chi — alert and ready to strike. The thought of straightening up and backing into it set the fine hairs on my forearms and nape on end.
Thor's eyes met mine. Our gazes locked, and I swear he did a Zen mind meld. Soothing waves of chi — energy — flowed through me. The brimstone stink evaporated, replaced by the calming scent of lavender and sage.
Hazel's gaze swiveled from me to Thor, then back to me. Looking buffeted by an unseen wind, she silently returned to her seat.
The corners of Thor's full lips curved upward. Two urges warred within me — the desire to leap across the room and kiss him, and the urge to arch my neck and breathe fire.
Thor's smile widened.

Author Interview

Mindy:  As a reader, I'm always interested to find out what types of books authors like to read themselves. You write a variety of books, but what genre is your favorite to read and why

Cindy:  I tend to read YA books mostly. There are so many great ones available right now. The main reason I began writing YA is because it's what I was reading. Once in a while I'll venture off into horror, thriller, romance, or other adult novels, but the bulk of what I read is YA. In fact, I just finished Warm Bodies, and am partly into Fight Club, which is definitely not YA, but still very interesting. I just beta-read three different YA books for other authors, and have a huge pile of TBR which are almost exclusively YA. I only wish I had more time to read, but it feels like such a guilty pleasure any more when I should be writing. That's what's great about long baths, long-lines to wait in, and long car rides - guilt free reading!

Thank you Cindy!

My Review

Rapunzel Untangled was very enjoyable.  I thought Rapunzel herself was a doll and although naive (of course she was naive, she has spent her whole life in a tower) she learns a lot about friendship, love, and herself.  I immediately loved Fane.  He's a very sweet guy and takes Rapunzel under his wing.  Helping her to question her strange upbringing and how sick she really is.

3 1/2 of out 5 stars.  This is a fast paced book with great characters, romance, and lots of heart.  The ending took a different turn I wasn't expecting, but it did not distract me from enjoying the book.
