Sunset Rising by S.M. McEachern -- Book Blast

sunset risingSunset Rising by S.M McEachern
February 2024: Desperate to find refuge from the nuclear storm, a group of civilians discover a secret government bio-dome. Greeted by a hail of bullets and told to turn back, the frantic refugees stand their ground and are grudgingly permitted entry. But the price of admission is high.

283 years later… Life as a slave in the Pit had never been easy, but for seventeen-year-old Sunny O’Donnell it was quickly careening out of control. Her mother was killed in the annual spring Cull, leaving her alone with a father who decided to give up on life.  It’s not that she blamed him for grieving, but if they didn’t earn enough credits to keep their place inside the Pit, they would be kicked out into a world still teeming with radiation. That left her to earn the credits for both of them.  It didn’t help that her boyfriend, Reyes Crowe, was pressuring her to get married and abandon her father.

Sunny didn’t think life could get any worse, until she was forced upstairs to the Dome to serve and entertain the elite at a bachelor party. That’s where she met Leisel Holt, the president’s daughter, and her fiancĂ©, Jack Kenner. Now Sunny and Jack Kenner are wanted for treason. If they catch them, they’ll be executed.

She thought Leisel’s betrayal was the end…but it turns out it was just the beginning.

Excerpt:

I had decided I didn’t want to give up on my plan to help change things. After all the hardship I had brought on my father and Summer, I owed it to them to try to make things right. I didn’t want to fail.
Jack stood up and went into his T’ai Chi stance. I followed. He began the fluid movements and I tried to keep up, but he seemed to be going a lot faster tonight.
“So you want to start stopping people in the hall and ask them if they want to join the rebellion?” Jack asked, his tone light.
“Well, it sounds stupid when you say it like that.”
“Alright, we’re all warmed up now.” Jack faced me in a defensive stance. “Take your best shot.”
“I don’t feel like it anymore.”
“Come on.” He flicked a hand out at me, stopping inches from my face. “Pretend I’m Reyes. You must be mad at him.”
I threw the heel of my hand toward his face, which he blocked easily. I followed with a roundhouse kick at his stomach. He pushed me away.
“That’s weak, Sunny,” he said. “Come on. The other night you just about ripped my head off when you were mad about Summer.”
I had been really mad about Summer. Even the thought of her now in the clutches of that crazy president was making me angry. He had my father, too. My anger snuck out of the place where I thought I’d had it tucked safely away and gripped me again.
I threw a punch as hard as I could at Jack, then another. He blocked them both, but I kept coming at him. First with my right leg followed swiftly by my left. He threw a right punch at me, but I pulled my head back and he missed. I instinctively knew he was going to follow with his left fist, and I ducked. He missed again. He was smiling at me. I came at him to wipe the smile off his face, but he turned, and I missed. He grabbed me from behind.
“I see the boyfriend isn’t the key to getting you mad. Your best friend is,” he whispered in my ear.
I drove my elbow as hard as I could into his stomach. As soon as I made contact, I heard his breath forced out of him. I realized I might have hit him too hard.
“I’m sorry!” I turned around to see if he was okay. He was bent over, holding his stomach. “Jack, are you hurt?”
“I’ll be fine,” he choked out.
I felt a little helpless watching him struggle to get his breath back. He finally straightened up and gently touched a couple of his ribs.
“Nothing broken.” He limped off to sit in a chair. “Maybe I should have told you the first rule of sparring before I started teaching you. You don’t actually hurt your partner.”
“Sorry. I guess I let my frustrations get the better of me.”
“I don’t suppose there’s a hot shower in here?” he asked, even though he must have known the answer.
“No.” I laughed at the thought. “But I can take you to the common bath.”
He got up from the chair. “Take me.”
I found a couple of towels and a bar of soap in a cupboard. “We only have about forty-five minutes left before lights out. We need to be back by then.”
We left the apartment and headed toward the bathroom. I wouldn’t be surprised if Jack changed his mind when he saw where he had to bathe. It wasn’t anything like the private hot shower in his apartment. When we reached the common bath, I was silently relieved to see that the water had been changed recently. It wasn’t bad at all.
“It’s freezing!” Jack exclaimed when he put his hand in the water. “I’m not getting in there.”
“You don’t actually get in. Soak your towel in the water and wash off that way. You can dry with mine. You go first.” I started toward the door.
“Wait. We’re supposed to be married. Isn’t it going to look weird if we’re taking turns in here?”
“I’m not watching you have a bath. I’m only prepared to take the pretend marriage thing so far.”
He gave me a wry look. “We’ll just turn our backs on each other. It will save time, and we can get back before lights out.”
“I don’t know. It seems a little…intimate.” But there was a guard on duty within view of the bathroom, and he might wonder why we were taking turns.
“I promise I won’t peek,” Jack said, but I wasn’t convinced. “Hey, I’m taking a big risk here, too. You know how many girls would love to see the Jack Kenner naked?”
That made me smile. A week ago, that was probably true. “I can’t believe I’m going to do this. Turn around.”
We both turned our backs on each other. I stripped as fast as I could so I wouldn’t have time to change my mind. I heard his clothes drop to the floor. An image of my hands on his naked chest came back to me, and a feeling of excitement began to grow in the pit of my stomach. If I turned around right now we would both be naked and only inches apart. A warm sensation spread through me at the thought, and my chest tightened, making it difficult to breathe. I wanted to banish the thoughts from my mind. I didn’t want to think of Jack in that way.
I dunked one of the towels into the water and scrubbed my arms. The water was freezing and made me shiver, but at least now I could blame my heavy breathing on that. And I was grateful it was helping to douse the heat that seemed to be consuming me. When I was done, I rinsed the towel and stuck it out behind my back to pass it to him.
“That was quick,” he said. I heard the water splashing behind me then Jack sucked his breath in. “Oh my god, it’s cold!”
I dried off, put on my clothes and waited for him to finish and get dressed before I knelt down to wash my hair.
“Not so bad,” Jack said, but I could tell he was lying.
He dipped his head in the water, ran the bar of soap through his hair, and then rinsed. I was still working on my long hair. A lot of coal was coming out, darkening the water and I felt a little guilty considering it had just been changed.
I wrapped the towel around my head to hide my red hair until I could reapply the coal. “We better get back before lights out,” I said.
Jack opened the door for me. “Even though it was freezing, it feels good to be clean,” he said.
“I like the cold. It’s refreshing.” Maybe I would have to have a bath every night if my body was going to continue to respond to Jack like that, I thought.
Back at our apartment, I busied myself hanging up the towels and brushing out my wet hair. I was feeling a little vulnerable without the coal, but knew I would have to wait until my hair dried before I could reapply it. The lights would go out any minute now. I put the brush away and turned around to find Jack flopped in a chair observing me.
“What?” I asked.
“Nothing.” He looked away. But there was something about the way he was looking at me…
“Did you peek?” I asked.
“Sunny,” Jack shook his head, but a smile tugged at the corners of his mouth and his cheeks turned pink. “Of course I peeked. I’m a guy.”

Launch - The Emerson Brothers
Some of you have already read Cassie and Shane’s love story. Some have read Jade and Gavin’s tale too. Now for the first and final book of the series. That’s right – first chronologically, and final in order of release. In Reese’s Cowboy Kiss you’ll find out just how Reese and Blake’s romance begins. From that first, tender kiss to the conflict that threatens to tear them apart, their story is filled with passion, romance, and action too.

Kelly P's Blog - Interview
If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?
Reese: Genuine, Tender-hearted, Flirtatious, Spunky, Charming
Blake: Loyal, Hard-working, Honest, Masculine, Passionate

It has been an absolute pleasure to read comments about the setting for my Sweet Montana Bride Series. Emerson Ranch has willing protectors, welcoming folks, and all the beauty a land can possess. Oh, and let’s not forget about the good-looking cowboys...

I Am A Reader - Dream Cast
As a writer, I know just what my characters look like. Sometimes I can picture a certain actor who fits the bill, other times it requires a little more thought. With Reese Taylor, it was easy. She’s a Texan pageant girl who defies the stereotype in many ways. She’s loving, kind, and looks for the best in others. While she’s beautiful and bold and loves to flirt with the guys, at twenty-four years old, Reese has never been in love.

"The romance in this book is sweet and clean (with much kissing!), and the suspense near the end of the book is very exciting. The main characters in the book are well-written and the secondary characters are good supporting cast members. The story is a quick, cute read."

Musings of Immortals - Spotlight

Letters from Annie (Douglass) Lima - Recipe for Slow-Cooked Beef Brisket
In the Sweet Montana Bride Series, the Emersons like to welcome newcomers with a nice, big meal. So when Reese came with a family recipe of her own, they were thrilled to serve up the savory beef brisket. In the book I refer to it as Texan BBQ, but I always had this delicious dish in mind. It is one of my favorites, and definitely worth trying at home.

Can we expect to hear more from these characters in the near future?
Yes, actually! I’ll be doing a few novellas connected to the Sweet Montana Bride Series. The first one, Rough Edges, is about Allie (the Emerson Brothers’ cousin). After her divorce, she reconnects with her ex-husband’s old high school friend, Braden Fox. Braden is a carpenter, and though he has always liked Allie, he has hard feelings about Allie picking Terrance over him. It’s called Rough Edges, and it will be about Braden’s ability to smooth out the past.

Wishful Endings - Review
"If you're looking for romance with some suspense and plenty of laughs and sizzle, then you'll definitely like Reese's Cowboy Kiss."

"I loved this book and I recommend it to everyone that likes a clean romance with a dash of angst, a cupful of looming danger, and a whole lot of cowboys."

"Loved this book! Romance and suspense! Well written and easy to follow. Clean little romance that you will love as well!"

"This book is everything I love–clean romance, mystery, comedy–all rolled into one. And I can honestly say that this book is just a notch below my favorite."

The Written Adventure - Dodging An Unwanted Kiss
"We all know what it’s like to go out on a date only to find the chemistry isn’t quite what we hoped for. But what if our date has a different view? What if, at the end of the evening, he leans in for a goodnight kiss? In Reese’s Cowboy Kiss, Reese, our Texan bombshell, has to deal with this very dilemma when Rowdy, one of the ranch hands, asks her out. Sadly, she’s already fallen for the foreman of the ranch, Blake Emerson, so the guy doesn’t stand a chance."

Sarah's StoryLines - “Helping” Him Notice
Relationships can be rather tricky at times. Men are often clueless as to the time and attention we women need. In novel Reese’s Cowboy Kiss, Reese realizes the truth of this when Blake, the man watching over her in witness protection, spends hours late into the night out on the land. And though the two have had a connection, he continues to leave her to either eat alone, or go against his wishes and invite the ranch hands to join her for dinner.

"I loved watching the romance blossom and the suspenseful element was fantastic! I was on edge reading through those parts--very romantic and very creepy. The author did a great job in drawing me completely into the story."

Southern Chelle - Review
"I loved this book! I’m a huge sucker for a good cowboy/country/western book anyway, but Reese’s Cowboy Kiss was an absolutely amazing read!"

Bookworm Lisa - Review
"Kimberly Krey does an amazing job at creating a story that is fun and entertaing. Reese's personality takes the cuteness and fun factor for a female MC to a fantastic level."

Texan pageant winner, Reese Taylor, has a former classmate who wants her dead. Now she must leave her friends and family to enter a protection program on Emerson Ranch. A group of good-looking cowboys awaits her, but Reese has her eye on Blake Emerson, the one man too busy with the ranch to give her a chance.

Blake Emerson has no time to go lookin’ for love. He’s got a ranch to run, positions to fill, and an ache in his heart from love gone wrong. So when he agrees to harbor a witness to help on the ranch, Blake assumes his first two problems are solved. But he never dreamed his new guest would be a woman. One he was destined to lose his heart to.

With sparks burning hot and danger around the bend, one question lingers in his mind: Has he only added to his list of troubles, or has Blake just found the woman of his dreams?

*While this book is considered clean romance, it contains passionate kissing and a few mild curse words.*

The Reckoning by Teyla Branton -- Book Blast

The Reckoning
The Reckoning
Only One Can Survive The Reckoning
Erin Radkey has always known the day would come when she would have to personally confront the Triad leader of the power-hungry Emporium. But she never thought it would be with a snake in her head that feeds on her energy. Or that she’d be in the company of an uncertain ally who might turn on her at any moment.
The stakes are high as new intel uncovers a startling Emporium plot that will catapult the entire world into war. Erin is determined to save not only the mortals but also her friends—even if it means sacrificing herself and her newfound love for Ritter Langton.
Ritter is just as determined to save Erin and prevent what would usher in the most bloody century the world has ever known, but even he might not recognize the person she becomes.
Every day the enemy grows stronger. There will be no second chance.
Excerpt

I started firing. My third man fell and Mari’s second before the group turned in our direction. Two men at the back dropped from Ritter and Stella’s fire, followed by two more. Nine down. They opened fire. The rat-a-tat-tat of their automatic weapons sliced through the stillness of the night. We had to hurry. Mari crouched behind the car, while I went over the top, using Ritter’s speed. He was already there. I landed on one rotund Hunter while bringing my trangue gun down on another. I rolled as I fell. Another turned his gun in my direction, but I was already diving away, the bullets spraying the short grass. Twisting, I came around, my foot out, kicking the gun from his hand. He slammed his fist at me, but I deflected it with my left arm and jabbed my right hand into his gut. He grunted and leaned forward into my next punch. I looked around as he fell, but I already sensed everyone was down.
“Get them into their van,” Stella said. “It won’t be long before someone comes to investigate those shots.” She grabbed a Hunter and started tugging him across the ground.
I sent my thoughts out wider, finding two more life forces slinking in our direction. They were dimmer than the average life forces, which meant they were shielded. Before I could warn the others, Desoto’s two patrolman emerged from the trees only twenty feet away. I caught a glimpse of automatic rifles before a spotlight blinded me.
“Stop,” said a voice I recognized as belonging to the Unbounded who’d found Walker asleep in the security room. “Put down those weapons.”
Unbounded. Both of them, I told the others. Mari, stay behind the car until I tell you.
Ritter, Stella, and I dropped our tranques and raised our hands as the Unbounded moved closer. I could see a red dot on Ritter’s forehead, and as there wasn’t one on Stella’s, I figured another must be on mine. Though the bullets wouldn’t kill us, we’d be out of commission long enough to lose the information we’d obtained unless Stella had already uploaded it to our servers. Worse, we’d be back in Emporium hands.
I’d rather die a true death.

Praise for The Reckoning:

I just loved the whole Saga! Well-written, completely addictive, keeps you on the edge, wanting to know what comes next! I really think the author should consider a movie or a TV series for the whole four books! For not being a SF fan, I just can say that this was AWESOME!

The fourth instalment in the Unbounded series definitely lives up to the action packed books preceding it. I love the strength of Erin’s character, and the novel made for compelling reading.

The Unbounded world is a fascinating place to visit! I would recommend this series to anyone, women, men, young adults. Not overly complicated yet the author weaves an amazing tail. I can hardly wait to see what is next for the Unbounded!

teylaAuthor Teyla Rachel Branton
Teyla Rachel Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, including a two-year-old, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. She thrives on the energy and daily amusement offered by her children, the semi-ordered chaos giving her a constant source of writing material. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, Teyla writes novels, often with a child on her lap. She warns her children that if they don’t behave, they just might find themselves in her next book! She’s been known to wear pajamas all day when working on a deadline, and is often distracted enough to burn dinner. (Okay, pretty much 90% of the time.) A sign on her office door reads: DANGER. WRITER AT WORK. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK. She loves writing fiction and traveling, and she hopes to write and travel a lot more. She also loves shooting guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. She has worked in the publishing business for over twenty years.
