Excerpt

Maybe their souls really were here together. Somehow, some way—but that couldn’t be possible. She shook herself, trying to shake away the feeling. Believing this was all real would only drive her further down the road to insanity. She was already having trouble getting a grip on reality as it was. She needed to stay grounded. Rational. Outside of here, she had a life to live. Believing in the reality of this Phoenix would make her want to give all that up.

“What are you thinking about?” Phoenix joined her by the edge of the pool and looked up at the skylights.

Telling him the truth would only ruin the moment. “I’m thinking about how we should spend our time here.”

Whatever time they had, she didn’t want to waste it. Without hesitation, she dived into the water. She preferred swimming in the ocean. Water without limits. This water was cool, clear, tasted like chlorine, but everything about it still held a sense of magic. Kennedy floated at the deep end for a while before coming up. When she did, Phoenix knelt by the edge, minus his shirt.

She smiled playfully. “Are you getting in?”

There was no point in being shy. In this place, could openly show her affection. In this place…she was free.

“I was considering it.” He grinned.

The water slowly rose toward him, Kennedy pushing it with her mind. Phoenix saw it coming, and shook his head. “No way. You’re not playing fair.”

“Then jump in already. Don’t make me drown you, Jorgensen.”

His skin brightened, little flickering flames bursting from his palms and the soles of his feet. “It’s okay if you do,” he said, standing up. “I’d rather drown inside this infinite night than to ever see the light of day again.” With that said, he dived into the water.

She felt him pull her under by her feet. Air bubbles escaped when she tried to laugh. But down here, she didn’t need air. The water protected her completely. She reached for Phoenix, found his lips, and gave him her oxygen.

She thought about what he said, about drowning inside this dream, and wondered if it were even possible. If she could find a way to sleep forever, would it really be the worst way to go? He said it was his perfect moment. She supposed it was hers, too. To freeze it for all eternity…well…that would be okay with her.

About the Author

I don't consider myself a writer. I'm a storyteller.

My two great loves are books and coffee. If it weren't for books, my heart wouldn't feel as full. And if it weren't for coffee, I wouldn't know what mornings are. That being said, the guy at Starbucks knows me well. He sings to me sometimes.

I live in Orlando, Florida with my family and two rescue mutts. Their personalities are like night and day. One is gold. The other is black. The gold one doesn't like to sleep in. Before I've had my coffee, we are enemies.
